Division Chief of Adult Multi‑Specialty, Department of Anesthesiology University of Virginia: UVA Provost's Office: School of Medicine: Anesthesiology Description The Division Chief of Adult Multispecialty Anesthesiology is responsible for promoting excellence in the provision of perioperative care for patients undergoing general and trauma, ENT, urology, plastics, ophthalmologic, and orthopedic surgery. They will work closely with the director of offsite anesthesia to optimize care for Non‑OR Anesthesia (NORA) procedures (including digestive health) that do not fall under other divisions (e.g. neuro IR). Reporting: In this capacity, the Division chief will report to the Chair, Executive Vice Chair, Vice Chair of Clinical Operations (for clinical areas) and other Vice Chairs, and work with the Departmental Quality Officer and Division Chiefs to ensure alignment of departmental goals. Responsibilities Design protocols and processes to optimize the provision of anesthesia care for the surgical and medical procedures that fall under the adult multispecialty division. Collaborate with the nursing leadership, surgeons and procedures in locations where adult multispecialty anesthesia services are offered to ensure optimal workflow. Address quality issues and concerns that may emerge through (Be Safe) events related to adult multispecialty anesthesia. Attend > 65% of monthly departmental Anesthesia Leadership Team (ALT) meetings. Hold and lead regular meetings (at least 6 per year) for their division to discuss issues related to the provision of anesthesia services for adult multispecialty cases. At these meetings, they should also cover educational and research issues related to the division. Work closely with the residency or fellowship program directors to make sure that resident’s and fellow’s educational goals are met and their evaluations are submitted in a timely manner. Additionally, the division chief will ensure the division develops and maintains a robust didactic curriculum for the residents and fellows rotating through the service. Play a role in the development and mentorship of division faculty. In this capacity, the division chief will work closely with the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs to achieve this goal. The division chief will report on the progress of faculty members in the division to the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs during reappointments and promotions. Nominate faculty for local, regional, and national awards if they meet criteria. Nominations should be made in coordination and conjunction with the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs. Promote the academic mission of the division and ensure that the division is represented in national subspeciality meetings by various faculty members. Participate in the faculty annual evaluation process through providing requested feedback related to each division member’s relative contributions to the departmental missions – clinical care, education, research, and community engagement. Ensure billing compliance within the division and partner with departmental administrative leadership to look for opportunities to maximize billing and collections within the division. Assist in division scheduling, ensuring the workforce model is reflective of the needs of the division, and in recruiting new faculty to meet those needs. Partner with department administrative leadership in the development of a robust orientation program for new faculty joining UVA’s Department of Anesthesiology. Promote ASPIRE values within the division, as well as help to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment. Assist the Chair and Vice Chairs with recruiting new faculty for the division. Meet with surgeons to proactively address shared goals including efficiency and patient safety and quality issues. The division chief is responsible for creating a strategy and a clear vision for the division to contribute to the Departmental and Health System missions. In this position, the division chief will work closely with surgeons and proceduralists to develop enhanced recovery pathways and institute practice guidelines for various surgeries and procedures. They will be responsible for maintaining and improving the quality and efficiency of the anesthesia services that they oversee. Qualifications Board Certification in Anesthesiology. Eligible for Medical Licensure in Virginia. Eligible for the position of Associate or Full Professor in the UVA School of Medicine. Experience managing daily operating room operations. Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to professionalism expectations. Experience interacting and negotiating with diverse groups of healthcare providers including surgeons, nurses, etc. Experience managing call schedules. Experience with constructive problem solving.
