Position Type / Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position that works on average 35-40 hours a week. Overtime may be required. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8 hours a day. Work schedule will be adjusted based on the needs of the department. This position may also be “on call” as needed to provide coverage. Summary: The Mechanic performs work of considerable difficulty in the repair and maintenance of agency vehicles and equipment in safe operation; performs related work as assigned. Essential functions of this position include: Be able to use and understand an array of tools and technical equipment. Be able to use complex electronic diagnostic equipment to analyze on-board computers and other systems and trouble shoot repairs. Be able to look at mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems, identify problems and think about possible solutions. Maintain an efficient and effective system of routine maintenance and preventative care of vehicles in the fleet. Diagnose, assign and repair agency owned vehicles and other vehicles that are assigned to our fleet. Correctly and efficiently install parts. Perform gas and arc welding. Conduct test drives after repairs to ensure the vehicle is running properly. Keep accurate records of all repairs, including supplies, parts, and labor, utilizing data bases as appropriate. Maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment. Perform bus safety inspections; assist State Police during mandatory annual bus safety inspections. Promote a high standard of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work areas. Report any and all unsafe and hazardous conditions to the Transportation Fleet Manager. Education/Talent Requirements: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED). The ability to read and write in English, utilize basic math skills and basic computer word processing and the ability to comprehend written instructions and record information. This employee will be required to successfully complete all required initial and update trainings on an ongoing basis. Ability to be certified within one year of employment with Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic certifications by the State of Michigan in gas and diesel engines, drive train, suspension, brakes and electrical systems. This position requires driving; individuals must have a valid Michigan driver’s license with three (3) or more years of driving experience, less than six (6) points, and no exclusionary violations on driving record. Work Experience Requirements: Two years previous experience as a heavy-duty diesel and gas truck mechanic. Experience performing a wide variety of repair tasks, including diagnosing mechanical problems and proficiency in gas and arc welding. The capacity to work in a team environment with intermittent supervision. The ability to work respectfully and courteously with a wide variety of individuals, including the public, agency employees and passengers. Must pass all required background checks, physicals and drug screens. If the background check reveals disqualifying information, employment shall be terminated unless the disqualifying information was successfully appealed as inaccurate, expunged or set aside. Travel: Must be willing and able to travel up to 25% between job sites and outside repair shops as needed. May be required to travel for meetings, trainings and conferences on occasion. Travel is primarily local, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required. Company vehicle is typically supplied; however, use of personal vehicle may be occasionally required. Work Environment: This employee usually works in a repair shop environment where frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and increased exposure to vibrations should be expected. May be required to perform job duties outside of the typical shop setting at various work sites and/or outdoors for emergency repairs. Moderate noise (i.e. repair tools, interactions between co-workers, and running engines in an indoor setting). Ability to work in a confined area. This position occasionally works in close proximity to people. While the majority of working time is spent indoors in a shop type environment, employees in this position may work outdoors in all seasons for short periods of time, e.g. emergency on-site repairs, assisting passengers on and off vehicles, snow removal, etc. Physical Demands of the Job: Heavy work; up to 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds should be expected. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This employee may also be required to sit continuously for several hours as needed to drive a vehicle. Job Description Job Description The general purpose of the welder is primarily to be responsible for the adequate and safe welding of components used in the daily production of piling equipment and accessories. Work is completed under the direction and/or guidance of the superintendent, keyman/foreman, and/or shop supervisor. Responsibilities: Fabricate, per drawing, the various weldments needed for standard and non-standard production. Performing, in an expert manner, any welding job from start to finish (including welding, layout, fixturing, drilling, and tapping) without instructions or assistance – except for unusual circumstances. Perform set up and operation of burning, grinding, sawing, tapping, and drilling operations. Complete deburring of parts after welding. Additional Responsibilities When Not Welding: The following additional responsibilities of the welder may be assigned by the superintendent, shop supervisor, or keyman/foreman when conditions warrant. Assist the other crew members or shop personnel in performing their duties as directed by the superintendent, shop supervisor, and/or keyman/foreman.
